Soccer News – La Liga
Be ready for some terrific football once again, because La Liga starts on Friday with the match between Athletic Bilbao and Barcelona at the San Mames Barria. Can Barca win the league for a third consecutive season? Or maybe Real Madrid will strike back with the return of Zinedine Zidane? But let’s not forget about Diego Simeone’s Atletico Madric, which made a very promising transfer during the summer. Let’s see what’s happening with La Liga’s best teams at the moment.
Despite of the humilation against Liverpool in the Champions League and the lost Copa del Rey final against Valencia, Barcelona’s manager Ernesto Valverde was not sacked. After all, he won La Liga twice in his first two season at the club. He’s not loved by most of Los Cules’ fans, but the board decided to stick with him.
On the market Barcelona made another huge deal, spending 120 million euro for the French superstar Antoine Griezmann. The striker joined from Atletico Madrid, one year after he actually rejected Barca’s offer. In the same time the champions also bought one of Europe’s best young stars – Frenkie de Jong, who has to improve the team’s midfield. The Brazilian goalkeeper Neto was bought as a replacement for Jasper Cillesen, while Junior Firpo from Real Betis was signed to be an alternative to Jordi Alba on the left flank. Meanwhile the young Senegalese Moussa Wague was promoted to the first team.
Some players left the Camp Nou as well. Malcom was sold to Zenit after just one year in Catalonia, while Jasper Cillesen, Andre Gomes, Paco Alcacer and Denis Suarez were also sold. The Belgian veteran Thomas Vermaelen left as free agent and moved to Japan.
Real Madrid will try to recover after a terrible last season. Los Blancos performed in a terrible way during the previous campaign, which led to the sacking of two different managers and the surprising return of Zinedine Zidane. Can Zizou bring back the glory at the Bernabeu? It remains to be seen.
Real Madrid spent a lot of money on the market this summer. The club paid 100 million euro to Chelsea for the Belgian superstar Eden Hazard, while a lot of money were paid for Eintracht Frankfurt’s Luka Jovic, Porto’s Eder Militao, Olympique Lyonnais’ Ferland Mendy and Santos’ Rodrygo as well. In the same time Mateo Kovacic was sold to Chelsea, while Marcos Llorente moved to Atletico Madrid. Raul de Tomas and Theo Hernandez also left the team, moving to Benfica and Milan. The talented midfielder Dani Ceballos didn’t win Zidane’s trust and he was loaned to Arsenal.
It was an interesting summer for Atletico Madrid. Some important players left the club, but some other exciting ones were brought in. The legendary Diego Simeone remained at the Wanda Metropolitano, which was good news for the fans.
During the summer Atletico said goodbye to one of their best players – Antoine Griezmann. The French star was bought by Barcelona, but he was replaced by one of Europe’s most exciting talents – Joao Felix. Just 19-years old, Felix is regarded a future star. Los Colchoneros paid 126 million to Benfica for his services, which is a serious investment. In the same time Atletico also signed Real Madrid’s talented midfielder Marcos Llorente, while Espanyol’s centre back Mario Hermoso also moved to the Wanda Metropolitano. Tottenham’s Kieran Trippier, Porto’s Felipe and Athletico-PR’s Renan Lodi also arrived to strenghten the defense.
Antoine Griezmann was not the only big figure who left the Wanda Metropolitano. The club icons Diego Godin and Juanfran left as free agents, while the midfielder Rodri was sold to Manchester City. Lucas Hernandez completed his move to Bayern Munich, while Gelson Martins was sold to Monaco. Luciano Vietto and Filipe Luis also said goodbye to the fans.
Last season was successful for Valencia, because Los Che qualified for the Champions League again. Now they will aim to do the same thing.
On the market Valencia signed Barcelona’s Jasper Cilessen as their new goalkeeper, while Neto moved to the Camp Nou. Meanwhile the club signed Celta’s striker Maxi Gomez, who shall bring some goals. The French centre back Eliaquim Mangala returned to the Mestalla as a free agent, while Simone Zaza, Jeison Murillo, Santi Mina and Ruben Vezo left the club.
After failing to qualify for the Champions League last season, now Sevilla have only one goal for the new campaign – return to the Top 4. Los Rojiblancos will be managed by a new man – the ex-Spain and ex-Real Madrid head coach Julen Lopetegui.
On the market Sevilla made a lot of deals, intending to start a new project. Four players arrived from the French Ligue 1. They are Monaco’s Rony Lopes, Bordeaux’s Jules Kounde, Nantes’ Diego Carlos and Olympique Marseille’s Lucas Ocampos. Other players who joined the Andalusians are RB Salzburg’s Munas Dabbur, Eibar’s Joan Jordan, PSV’s Luuk de Jong, Porto’s Oliver Torres, Ajax’s Maximillian Wober and Galatasaray’s Fernando. Meanwhile the club loaned Real Madrid’s left back Sergio Reguilon for the season.
In the same time Sevilla sold its best striker Wissam Ben Yedder, who chose to move to Monaco. Meanwhile Pablo Sarabia was sold to PSG, while the Dutch winger Quincy Promes joined Ajax. The Colombian striker Luis Muriel was sold, while Aleix Vidal joined Alaves on loan. The Portuguese striker Andre Silva returned to Milan after his loan spell.
It’d be curious to see what clubs like Getafe, Real Betis, Espanyol, Real Sociedad and Athletic Bilbao will do in the new season. They did good during the last campaign, so we are going to follow their progress. Albacete, Alcorcon and Granada are the teams who won promotion from Segunda.
Just as always, it’s going to be very interesting in La Liga. Barcelona will try to defend the title again, but Real Madrid will be hungry for success after their terrible last season. Meanwhile, let’s see if the young star Joao Felix can inspire Atletico Madrid for something big. We have a lot to look at in Spain and we are sure it’s going to be a huge experience.
