The WTA tournament Bank of the West Classic in Stanford is underway. Here’s what happened so far and what is about to happen next.
Kayla Day from the USA reached the 1/8-finals after beating Misaki Doi from Japan with 6-4 6-2. Meanwhile the Russian Natalia Vikhlyantseva didn’t face any problems against the qualifier Danielle Lao from USA, beating her with 6-4 6-3. In the same day the legendary Maria Sharapova started her participation in the competition with a 6-1 4-6 6-0 win over Jennifer Brady from the USA.
The №7 seeded Lesia Tsurenko from Ukraine beat Lara Arruabarrena from Spain with 6-3 6-3 and reached the second round. The same thing was done by the brit Nicole Gibbs, who beat the qualifier Claire Lui with 4-6 6-2 7-6. Meanwhile Ana Konjuh from Croatia also reached the second round, after Marina Erakovic retired against her in the second set.
In the second round Maria Sharapova will face Lesia Tsurenko and it’s going to be an interesting match. Will Sharapova win her first title after her suspension? She’s one of the big favourites in this tournament.
But the biggest favourite in Stanford is the №1 seeded Garbine Muguruza from Spain. The Wimbledon winner will face Kayla Day in her first match from the competition. Meanwhile the №2 seeded Petra Kvitova will start her participation against the winner of the game between Francesca Schiavone and Kateryna Bondarenko.
The №3 seeded Madison Keys will have to deal with the winner between Caroline Dolehide from USA and Naomi Osaka from Japan. Meanwhile the №4 seed Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova will face the winner between Alison Riske (USA) and Magda Linette (Poland).
The №6 seeded CoCo Vandeweghe (USA) is expecting now her game against her countrywoman Nicole Gibbs.
